The Adventure Hat pattern gives you a choice of styles to keep your head cool, the sun out of your eyes, and the hat securely on your head.
Description
The Adventure Hat came about through a convoluted sequence of events. I have a sun hat I’ve used for years that I like, but it’s difficult to travel with because the brim is stiffened with what I think is a wire, so while it can travel flat, it can’t be folded up. I was packing my bike to go teach in Maine for a week, and decided that instead of packing my hat, I’d order a new one with a crushable brim to be delivered to my destination. Upon arrival, I found that my shipment was delayed and wouldn’t arrive until the day I was leaving, so I bought a $5 hat at the Dollar Store. The hat I ordered arrived just before I left.
So now I had three hats, and all of them had features I liked, but none of them was quite perfect. So of course I had to make my own hat, and because I couldn’t decide between features and construction options, I made a pattern with several alternatives and you can decide which version is right for all your outdoor adventures, from the garden to the wilderness. Welcome to your new favorite hat – The Adventure Hat!
This pattern includes two sizes, four different options for the crown, and two widths for the brim.
Sizes:
Small: Up to 22.25” head circumference
Large: Up to 24”
Difficulty Level: This pattern is an intermediate-level project. It requires some fiddly sewing of tight curves that require good accuracy in order for the pieces to fit, but it is not rocket science. It can all be done with a home sewing machine. It is probably not a good first sewing project unless you’re really patient or adventurous.
Materials: This hat can work great in a variety of materials, from nylon sun-protective fabric to cotton canvas. The brim is stiffened with heavy stabilizer or closed-cell foam.
